Blades hit for six

Arsenal's rampaging young Gunners will take some beating in the Carling Cup after thrashing Sheffield United 6-0.

Bendtner slots his second goal home.

Manager Arsene Wenger stuck to his policy of giving youth a chance in the much-maligned knock-out competition, naming a starting line-up with an average age of just 19 against Sheffield United, and he was not disappointed.

Mexican striker Carlos Vela scored a hat-trick, while Nicklas Bendtner - at 20 one of the senior men on display and with a wealth of first-team experience already - had put the young Gunners in command with two first half goals.

Vela chipped in a wonderful fourth five minutes after the restart, with Jack Wilshere, still only 16, adding a fifth before the 19-year-old South American completed his hat-trick as the Coca-Cola Championship side were outclassed.

Sterner tests lie ahead for the likes of Wales Under-21 midfielder Aaron Ramsey, the raw talent of Wilshere and aspiring full-back Kieran Gibbs - but on this evidence their Wembley dream may not be so far away.

The young Gunners began brightly and a crisp passing move sent Gibbs away down the left, only for his low centre to fly across the six-yard box.

United forward Danny Webber did well to weave himself into space just outside the Arsenal penalty area but then could not get any power on his shot and the ball bobbled through to Lukasz Fabianski, captain for the night and at 23 the oldest man in the home team.

Another quick passing Arsenal move on the edge of the area saw Bendtner play in Johan Djourou and the big defender turned to fire a goalbound effort which Paddy Kelly saved at full stretch.

Bendtner flicked on for Wilshere to collect in the overlap down the right but the teenager rushed his attempted curled shot and hit wide.

The Dane then showed the rest of the youngsters how it should be done with a fine finish after 31 minutes.

Vela held off Blades captain Chris Morgan before feeding the ball square to Bendtner just outside the penalty area.

The 20-year-old took a couple of touches before dispatching a low strike into the bottom right corner for his third goal of the season.

Arsenal felt they had a strong penalty claim when Morgan slid through on Wilshere but referee Phil Dowd was unimpressed.

After 42 minutes Ramsey - signed from Cardiff for £5million in the summer - weaved his way into the left of the penalty area before turning and playing a superb backheel to Bendtner who beat Kenny from six yards.

Before the visitors could regroup and look towards the respite of half-time they were further behind.

Bendtner turned provider as he chipped a pass through for Vela to run on to down the right.

The Mexican sprinted into the area before bending a delightful effort into the far corner.

In the second half Arsenal continued where they had left off as Gibbs stung the keeper's hands with a fierce angled drive from the left of the penalty area.

The full-back then sent a long pass upfield towards Vela who took the ball on his chest, leaving Morgan chasing shadows, and darted into the box to finish with an audacious chip over the stranded keeper.

It got worse for the battered Blades when Wilshere drilled in a fifth after 57 minutes.

Fran Merida's right-wing corner picked out the 16-year-old - Arsenal's youngest to appear in the Premier League - and he showed great composure to drill a low shot past Kelly from 22 yards.

However, Cesc Fabregas, by just more than a month, remains Arsenal's youngest scorer at 16 years 212 days with his goal against Wolves in December 2003.

There was no holding back by the rampant Gunners with Djourou heading over at the back post following another deep corner before Bendtner narrowly missed out on his hat-trick when his close-range shot trickled wide.

Vela then completed his treble with another well-taken effort after 88 minutes after running clear down the left onto Ramsey's pass.

The Dane celebrates a goal for Wenger's men.

Carlos Vela hit a hat-trick as Arsenal's youngest ever side won 6-0 against Sheffield United in the Carling Cup, with Nicklas Bendtner netting two and 16-year-old Jack Wilshere getting his first goal for the club.

Arsenal v Sheff Utd: Preview

Arsenal look set to field a young side for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie with Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium.

Wales Under-21 midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 16-year-old Jack Wilshere, reserve team captain Gavin Hoyte, Kieran Gibbs and first-year scholar Emmanuel Frimpong are all in contention against the Blades.

Alex Song, Johan Djourou and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will provide the experience, along with Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner and Mexican Carlos Vela.

Arsene Wenger is ready to show just what the "new generation'' at Arsenal can do in the Carling Cup this season.

The Gunners currently sit top of the Barclays Premier League following a weekend that saw them win 3-1 at Bolton, while title rivals Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all dropped points.

However, following a hectic travel schedule that included a Champions League trip to Kiev, Wenger will give most of his first team a well-deserved rest tomorrow night when Coca-Cola Championship side Sheffield United are the visitors to Emirates Stadium.

Last season, a similar policy saw the Gunners reach the Carling Cup semi-finals, before they lost over two legs to arch-rivals Tottenham, who went on to win the competition at Wembley.

Wenger is set to adopt the same approach once more, and the Arsenal manager believes his young side will offer the fans a glimpse into the club's future.

"I am very excited because it is a new generation where the youngest boy is Wilshere, then there is (Mark) Randall, Gibbs and so on,'' said Wenger.

"I believe it is very interesting to see a new generation come through, which is a little bit helped by having more experienced players around them, even though they are also young.

"It is always an adventure of a young group together and they can give you a bit of a view of how life at Arsenal could be in three or five years' time.''

Wenger told Arsenal TV Online: "It is a good opportunity for us to go through and for us to give young players a chance to show how good they are.''

James Beattie is expected to start for Sheffield United despite not being 100% match fit.

Beattie, who underwent knee surgery in the summer, has started in the Blades' last two matches, but manager Kevin Blackwell has conceded the striker is struggling for full fitness.

But Blackwell, who agreed to the recent sale of Jon Stead to Ipswich, is without fellow forward Darius Henderson, who injured knee ligaments in training last week, and has been forced to call on Beattie.

The Blades will again be without suspended defender Sun Jihai and midfielder Matthew Spring (ankle).

Blackwell, who has rested several key players in rounds one and two of the competition, could again make changes, with Lee Hendrie, Keith Gillespie and Danny Webber all hoping to play bigger roles.

Carlos Vela Bio

Vela was finally granted a work permit to play for Arsenal in the 2008/09 season, having first signed for the club in November 2005.

The Mexican youngster had caught the eye in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championships where he was named the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals and claimed the Adidas Golden boot.

A striker 'in the Eduardo mould' according to Arsene Wenger, Vela agreed a £2.5 million switch from Guadalajara in 2005, signing a five-year contract. However, due to English work permit restrictions for non-EU citizens which prevented him from playing in England, he was quickly loaned out to Celta de Vigo in February 2006.

After failing to make much of an impression at Celta, Vela was loaned out for the 2006/07 season to UD Salamanca, in the Spanish second division.

During a good season, Vela scored eight and created many of the side's 53 goals. Bigger clubs showed an interest as he was still ineligable to play for Arsenal, and for the 2007/08 season he was loaned to Osasuna.

In the season he scored three goals and played a part in their successful battle against the drop and big things are now expected of the 19-year-old.

His return to Arsenal for 2008/09 saw manager Arsene Wenger confirm that Vela would be involved with the first team next season.

Robin Van Persie Bio

Robin van Persie was very much an unknown quantity when he signed for Arsenal at the end of the 2003/04 season.

Bought for just £3million from Feyenoord Rotterdam, Van Persie has proved to be one of the steals of recent years and claims he could become the 'new Bergkamp' may not be wide of the mark.

Van Persie started his career in the Excelsior Rotterdam and Feyenoord youth teams, being capped for the Holland Under-19 and Under-21 sides in the process.

In January 2002 he signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Feyenoord and was drafted into the first-team squad because of injury problems at the age of 18.

Van Persie got his first taste of silverware in May when he played in Feyenoord's 3-2 UEFA Cup final victory over Borussia Dortmund at the De Kuip and his performances earned him the accolade of the Dutch PFA's Best Young Talent for 2001/02.

By 2005, Van Persie had emerged as a target for PSV Eindhoven, Werder Bremen and Sevilla, but it was Arsenal who won the race and he made his Arsenal debut in the Community Shield victory over Manchester United.

He continued to grow in confidence, but hit the headlines for the wrong reasons in February when sent off against Southampton after the red mist descended.

The player had more troubled at the end of the season when he was arrested upon suspicion of rape back in Holland, which resulted him spending time in jail while investigations were carried out. But no charges were brought against the star.

The young Dutchman went from strength to strength in the 2006/07 season and ended the season as the club's top goalscorer, despite being injured from February onwards with a broken metatarsal.

Following the departure of Arsenal star striker Thierry Henry prior to the 2007/08 season, Van Persie was expected to assume the role as the main striker of the club. However the Dutchman was injured played for Holland was ruled out for two months.

Failing to return to match fitness for the rest of the season, Van Persie's season was disrupted by injury, although he enjoyed a fairly successful time at Euro 2008 with the Holland side.

While his control and trickery have earned comparisons with fellow countryman Dennis Bergkamp and he continues to be thought of as one of the best prospects in the Premier League, Van Persie has yet to prove himself competent of playing an entire season injury free.

Luke Freeman Bio

Freeman was snapped up by Arsene Wenger after impressing at Gillingham in the 2007/08 season.

The young forward was Gillingham's youngest ever first team player and the youngest player ever to appear in the FA Cup when he played against Barnet aged 15 years and 233 days.

Having caught the eye of some top flight clubs, Freeman chose to move to Arsenal in the 2008 January transfer window.

He made his debut for the academy side and soon after played for the England under 16 team in the Montaigu Tournament in France.

Da Silva Eduardo Bio

Da Silva is a Croatian international striker of Brazilian descent who signed for Arsenal from Dinamo Zagreb on a four-year contract for a fee of around £8million.

He suffered a horrific compound fracture on his left fibula and a dislocated ankle from a foul by Martin Taylor in the match against Birmingham City in February 2008 and missed out on Euro 2008 with the injury.

The 24-year-old striker moved to Croatia at the age of 15 and took Croatian nationality in 2002.

Joining Dinamo Zagreb he initially took time to settle and was subsequently loaned to Bangu Atlético Clube and then to NK Inker Zapreaic who at the time played in the second tier of the Croatian football league.

He then made the return back to Dinamo where he established himself as a first team player in the 2003/04 season.

Da Silva has proved himself to be a prolific marksman during his time with Dinamo Zagreb and he has been voted Croatian Player of the Year in 2004 and 2006, and was the Croatian League's top scorer in both 2006 and 2007.

The 2006/07 season showcased his goalscoring talent, as he scored the most goals ever in a season of the Prva HNL, breaking a 13-year-old record set by former Dinamo striker Goran Vlaovic, netting 34 times in 32 games.

Eduardo made his Premier League debut with Arsenal on 19 August 2007 in the 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers and scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League qualifier against Sparta Prague.

However, Eduardo suffered a broken left fibula and an open dislocation of his left ankle in the third minute of Arsenal's match against Birmingham City in February 2008, following a high tackle by Martin Taylor, for which Taylor was sent off.

His injury was so graphic that replays of the incident were not shown, and it was reported that he would be out for around 9-12 months. Although he he said he would return in time for the 2008/09 season.

After initially impressing, Eduardo's injury could not have come at a worse time and Arsenal's title challenge was derailed as the players struggled to come to terms with their team-mate's plight.

Still with a lot to prove, the striker will hope his injury does not affect his future performances for the club.

Nicklas Bendtner Bio

Young striker Bendtner signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2005, having come through the youth ranks of FC Copenhagen in Denmark.

He was spotted playing for the Danish Under-19 side in an international tournament.

It again showed Arsenal's policy of looking to sign-up the cream of young talent across Europe.

The Denmark youth international was a deadly finisher for the FC Copenhagen youth teams, although has failed to cement his place in the first-team squad at the Emirates.

Bendtner, a towering forward, appeared in the Arsenal 16 for the first team in the Carling Cup tie against Sunderland in October 2005. And he replaced Quincy Owusu-Abeyie in the 90th minute to make his bow.

In May 2006, the youngster was called up to the Danish U-21 squad and then got his first call-up to the full national side in August 2006, scoring in a win over Poland aged just 18.

Bendtner was also loaned to Birmingham City in the same month, until January 2007. Manager Steve Bruce has already iterated his desire to keep the striker at the club for a full season, after his spree of goalscoring in the first few games.

He has scored 4 goals in 8 games for the club and stayed for the rest of the 2006/07 season. Returning to Arsenal for 2007/08, Bendtner was given the chance to fight for a first-team place and signed a new five-year contract in May 2007.

Showing good aerial prowess, the young Dane got on the scoresheet a few times - most notably saving the game against against arch-rivals Tottenham with a headed goal.

With a great deal of potential at his feet, Bendtner's 2007/08 season will unfortunately be best remembered for his on-pitch scuffle with strike partner Emmanuel Adebayor against Spurs in the Carling Cup.

Emmanuel Adebayor Bio

Adebayor made the surprise move to join Arsenal from AS Monaco in January 2006 for a reported £7million.

The Togo international had been excluded from the Monaco team for repeatedly missing training and he had a difficult relationship with Monaco coach Francesco Guidolin.

Adebayor had burst onto the scene in France in 2001/02 with FC Metz, but he really impressed the following term when scoring 13 goals. It was that form, when still aged 17, which attracted the interest of Monaco.

But 21 goals and two-and-a-half seasons later Adebayor was on his way out of Ligue 1 bound for the Premiership.

Adebayor was also part of the Monaco side which reached the final of the Champions League in 2003/04, the same season he was named Togolese Footballer of the Year.

The striker fired Togo to the World Cup finals for the first ever time in 2006, bagging 11 goals in qualifying making him the leading scorer in Africa.

However, his troubles at Monaco spilled into the international arena shortly after he signed for Arsenal. He linked up with Togo for the African Nations Cup but was left out of the starting line-up for the opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo after a fall-out with coach Stephen Keshi.

Rows over bonus payments have blighted his international career, but Adebayor remains the best player to come out of Togo.

Though he appeared very raw at times in his early appearances there was enough to suggest he would become an asset for the north London club and his first season was relatively successful.

However, taking over the striking mantle of Thierry Henry, his second season exploded the Togo star onto the world stage. Named in the PFA Team of the Year, Adebayor netted 30 goals in the Premier League, but a summer of transfer talk appeared to unsettle him.

Despite signing a long term contract with the club in May 2007, Adebayor's head was turned by interest from AC Milan and Barcelona - although manager Arsene Wenger insisted that the player would not be sold.

Jack Wilshire Bio

Another exciting prospect to come out of the Arsenal academy, Wilshere announced his presence at the club with some eye-catching displays in the 2008/09 pre-season campaign.

The driving force for the Gunners' U18 side, the 16-year-old has been played one year above his age-level for the England U17 side and has done well.

Boasting excellent technical skills, a powerful shot and great vision, Wilshere is held in high esteem by Arsene Wenger and may get his chance to impress further in the Carling Cup.

Theo Walcott Bio

Walcott has yet to full showcase his skills, having spent much of career at Arsenal as an 'impact player' coming off the bench.

The youngster has long been heralded as the hope for English football and his remarkable rise hit its hieights at the end of the 2005/06 season when he was sensationally selected in England's squad for the World Cup finals.

It came only five months after he had moved from Championship side Southampton to Arsenal in a deal worth up to £12million. What made it even more startling was that he had not played a single minute of first team action for the Gunners in the remainder of the season, being an unused substitute on six occasions.

Walcott moved to north London for an initial fee of £5million, rising to a possible £12million, making him the most expensive 16-year-old in history. He had set the Championship alight with Southampton, showing awareness, composure, confidence and ability beyond his years.

With lightening pace, superb finishing and a brilliant footballing brain and good with both feet, Walcott possessed all the attributes for a striker in the modern game.

Walcott, first spotted playing for AFC Newbury, began to impress in September 2004 when, aged 15 years and 175 days, he became Southampton's youngest player to feature for the reserves in a match against Watford.

Walcott was promoted to the Southampton first team for the 2005/06 season, with the club relegated into the Championship. His professional debut came as a 73rd-minute substitute in a 0-0 draw against Wolves aged 16 years and 143 days - eclipsing Danny Wallace as the club's youngest ever player.

His meteoric rise in 2005 also saw him finish in the top three of the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year. By then the speculation over Walcott's future had begun in earnest, with both Chelsea and Arsenal strongly linked.

Walcott could not sign a professional contract with the Gunners until his 17th birthday on March 16 and as such initially signed as a scholar. It was expected he would be loaned back to the Championship for the remainder of the season, but Arsenal immediately handed him a squad number.

Often coming off the bench to impress with his pace and skill, Walcott was a good impact player, but was often overawed by the big stage and could not hold down a first team place.

He rounded off the season with a fantastic goal in a losing cause against Chelsea in the Carling Cup final, and then chose to undergo shoulder surgery to cure a long-term problem, missing out on the European U21 Championships in Holland.

Summing up his 2007/08 season, Walcott came on against Liverpool in the Champions League to make a terrific impact. Running the length of the field to square for Emmanuel Adebayor to score the equalizer, Walcott would still end up on the losing side as Liverpool fought back; but the youngster gave notice of his talent.

Comparisons with Thierry Henry won't go away either, given that he has taken the famous #14 shirt for 2008/09.

Jay Simpson Bio

Simpson has been an ever-present in Arsenal's youth set-up since he was aged 13.

The young midfielder, who can also play up front, excelled for the reserves by scoring six times in eight starts and also put in 23 appearances for the U-18's.

Having started as a goalkeeper, the attacker is also a youth international, having played for the England U-17 team.

In February 19, 2007 he made history by becoming the first player ever to score a hat-trick at Emirates Stadium, for Arsenal's U18 side in an FA Youth Cup match against Cardiff.

He then chose to go on loan to Millwall and won the PFA's League One player of the year award for 2008 after his initial six-month loan deal was extended.

Tomas Rosicky Bio

Arsenal signed this Czech Republic international in May 2006 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £7million.

Rosicky, who was a target of Spanish side Atletico Madrid, is an energetic, attacking midfielder with a penchant for the spectacular and an impressive range of passing.

The midfielder was brought in after Robert Pires left the club at the end of his contract.

After he bagged a superb brace in the Czech Republic's opening game of the 2006 World Cup against the United States many were hailing the signing as Arsene Wenger's latest transfer coup, although an injury in his second season with the club curtailed his involvement with the squad.

Still, Rosicky had been a major name on the continental scene for many years, at one time being the most expensive Bundesliga signing after Borussia Dortmund bought him from Sparta Prague for £18million.

Rosicky made his professional debut for Sparta in 1998 and was an instant success. He earned the nickname 'the Little Mozart' in helping his hometown club win three successive league titles.

That led to interested from Europe's bigger leagues but it was Dortmund who smashed the German transfer record to complete the signing of one of the hottest young prospects in the game.

He was handed his international debut as a 19-year-old against the Republic of Ireland in 2000 and soon became an integral part of an exciting side.

Rosicky was part of a Dortmund team which enjoyed a fine run of success. They won the title in his first season and also reached the final of the UEFA Cup before losing to Feyenoord Rotterdam.

But Dortmund's fortunes took a downturn when they hit financial problems and they were no longer a force in the race for honours. As such, it came as no real surprise when the club - facing a second successive campaign without European competition - cashed in their chips with the player eager for a new challenge at Arsenal.

Rosicky took over the number 7 shirt which was formerly worn by Frenchman Robert Pires and scored his first goal for the club with a long range strike against Hamburg in the Champions League.

Only hitting the net three times in 2006/07, though, the Czech failed to follow in Pires' footsteps. An injury in his second season saw the midfielder limp off the pitch after nine minutes of the FA Cup tie with Newcastle at Emirates Stadium in January, and he did not reappear for the rest of the season.

Also missing out of Euro 2008, a fit Rosicky is an exciting prospect for Wenger and company, although he has yet to regain the kind of form which made him such a coverted signing two years ago.

Mark Randall Bio

Randall is a highly rated midfielder who made appearances for the reserves while still a schoolboy.

Scoring twice for the U-18s, Randall played in both games of the 2006/07 pre-season tour of Austria, and featured in the 3-0 win over AZ Alkmaar.

Randall signed his first professional contract for the club in February 2007 and made his first start for Arsenal in the Carling Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers.

The midfielder signed for Burnley on a loan deal at the end of January. The youngster made his Premier League debut against Sunderland in the final match of 2007/08 and had a goal disallowed.

Aaron Ramsey Bio

Ramsey became one of the most sought-after young players in Europe after impressing with Cardiff during the 2007/08 season.

Hot on the trail of the young Welshman were Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton, and the player himself had personal meetings with all the interested parties in a bid to make a decision over his future.

Ultimately he chose to develop his career under the watchful eye of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and took the number 16 shirt of the departed Mathieu Flamini.

Beginning his career at Cardiff, who beat off competition from Newcastle United to sign the youngster as an eight-year old for their youth academy, Ramsey worked his way through the system to eventually make his debut in the 2006/07 season.

In doing so, Ramsey became the youngest player to ever play for Cardiff City, aged just 16 years and 124 days.

Everton were the first club to try and lure Ramsey away with a £1m offer, although the deal was to start with a payment of £200,000 and rise depending on his future achievements.

That was rejected and Ramsey impressed against Chasetown in the FA Cup. He got his chance and made several more starts in the Cardiff side. His first full season of professional football saw him play in five of the club's six FA Cup matches, including the final and as soon as the season ended he was linked with a move.

Man Utd reportedly offered £5million for him, but the deal included a loan option for Cardiff to take him back next season. Ramsey was keen to develop his career and when his club accepted an offer from Arsenal which had no such clause, he accepted the move.

Fran Merida Perez Bio

Mérida is a very talented young player able to play in central midfield or on the left-side of midfield.

He followed in the footsteps of fellow Spaniard Cesc Fàbregas by signing for Arsenal, after failing to sign a professional contract with FC Barcelona, and he was spotted by Arsene Wenger's scouts playing in youth team competitions.

Mérida was ordered by the courts to pay a fee around ¬3.2million - which is being appealed - to FC Barcelona as compensation for his "failing to meet the terms of a personal pre-contract" with Barcelona.

Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the League Cup third round gave him his debut and he then joined Real Sociedad on loan for the second half of the 2007/08 season.

In April 2008 Mérida extended his deal with Arsenal by signing a long-term contract.

He continues to impress in the reserves and has been tipped to have a big future in the game with Wenger quoted as calling him 'an absolutely amazing player'.

Denilson Pereira Neves Bio

Denilson is currently the captain of the Brazilian national side at U-19 level.

Starting his career at Sao Paulo, Denilson played 12 games as a defensive midfielder before catching the eye of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Signing for the Gunners on the last day of the August transfer window for £3.4 million (US$6.5 million), Wenger strengthened his midfield options after the release of Pires and Bergkamp in the summer of 2006.

Potentially the replacement for Arsenal's current Brazilian holding midfielder, Gilberto Silva, Denilson was named in Arsenal's squad for their third Champions League match against CSKA Moscow; but showed that his passing skills were more similar to team-mate Cesc Fabregas.

Although he was ever-present in Arsenal's 2006/07 Carling Cup campaign, he only made his Premiership début for Arsenal as a substitute on December 30, 2006 in a 10 defeat against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Denilson secured a new contract with Arsenal in October 2007 and has impressed when given the chance to showcase his skills. However, with Gilberto and Cesc Fabregas ahead of him, the youngster has a lot to do if he is get himself into first-team contention on a regular basis.

Samir Nasri Bio

Hailed as 'the new Zidane' for the past few seasons, Nasri impressed during his time at Marseille, earning himself a place in the French squad for Euro 2008 and a summer transfer to Arsenal.

Scouted by Arsene Wenger for some time, the 21-year-old can play as a central midfielder, but will most likely replace the departing Alex Hleb on the wing.

Beginning his career with Marseille aged just nine years old, Nasri began to play in Ligue 1 in the 2004/05 season where he made an impression at 17.

Involved in the French national set up for a long time, progressing through the Under-16s, 17s, 18s, 19s and 21s, he was member of the France national under-21 football team and has been part of the French national team system since he was about 14.

With a growing international reputation, Nasri helped Marseille to UEFA Cup qualification in the 2006/07 season and was also awarded the French Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year trophy ahead of Jimmy Briand and Karim Benzema. He was also voted Marseille's player of the year by the fans.

The 2007/08 season saw Nasri cement his place as one of the best young talents in the French game and despite picking up a meningitis-like virus at the start of the season, he recovered to showcase his skills against Liverpool in the Champions League.

At the end of a disappointing season for OM, Nasri played his part in the French Euro 2008 campaign although was given the dubious honour of being a substituted substitute after Franck Ribery's injury and Eric Abidal's sending off forced Raymond Domench to change his hand in the 2-0 defeat to Italy.

With talk of a transfer to Arsenal rearing its head before the tournament, Wenger expressed hope that the deal could be completed and, after France's early exit, Nasri officially signed for Arsenal for an undisclosed amount on the 11 July 2008.

Henri Lansbury Bio

Henri has been at Arsenal since he was nine years-old and is one of the longest serving players in the academy.

One of the brightest prospects around in the midfield area, he recently captained England at under-16 level alongside team-mates Moses Barnett and Rhys Murphy.

Landsbury has spent a few matches on the bench for the club, but finally made his first team debut on 31 October 2007, in Arsenal's 3-0 League Cup win over Sheffield United.

Alan Smith, a former Arsenal striker, described him as having 'huge potential' and on July 1, 2008 Henri signed his first professional contract.

Kieran Gibbs Bio

Gibbs joined Arsenal from Wimbledon when their academy disbanded and they became MK Dons. He can play either central midfield or wide on the left and made eight appearances for the Under-18s in 2006/07, scoring once.

Although he has spent time on loan, Gibbs made his first-team debut for the club when he started a League Cup match against Sheffield United. He went on to play against Blackburn in the quarter-finals and signed a professional contract with Arsenal in September 2007.

In January 2008 he decided to go on loan to Norwich City until the end of the 2007/08 season and returned to Arsenal in April to go back into the reserves again.

Francesc Fábregas Bio

After emerging into English football through Arsene Wenger's tried and tested route of the League Cup, Fabregas has become one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the world.

Supremely skilful and with composure which belies his young years, Fabregas' performances when filling in for the injured Patrick Vieira, Edu and Gilberto Silva for much 2004/05 led to him becoming a fully fledged member of the first team squad earlier than planned - but there was no way the Gunners' coaching staff could have held him back.

Eventually filling the boots of Vieira after his departure to Juventus in 2005/6, Fabregas cemented his place in the Arsenal midfield and has often been described as 'the heartbeat' of the Arsenal attacks.

'Cesc', as he prefers to be known, first made history in October 2003 when he became the youngest player to turn out for Arsenal, in a League Cup tie against Rotherham United.

The Spaniard, who moved to Highbury in the summer of 2003 from Barcelona for a measly fee of around £500,000, was aged just 16 years 177 days when he took to the pitch for the Gunners for the first time.

He was welcomed fully into the first team squad for the 2004/05 season, playing the whole of the Community Shield victory over Manchester United.

And the midfield starlet kept his place for the 4-1 victory at Everton on the opening day of the Premiership season. He had a hugely influential first month of the season, although the return to fitness of Vieira curtailed his involvement.

The midfielder had also begun to make waves on the international scene. He was handed his debut for Spain when starting the international friendly against Ivory Coast - and playing the whole match - to become Spain's youngest cap for 70 years.

Fabregas was one of the few bright spots of a hugely disappointing season for the Gunners in 2005/06. With Vieira having left for Juventus, Fabregas became the focal point of the midfield and looked like a seasoned pro rather than a youngster starting out in the game as he approached 100 club appearances.

The key to Arsenal's creativity, Fabregas signed one of the longest contracts in history when he signed a new deal at the club, until 2014. He ended the 2006/07 season with several individual honours, including being named in the 2006 UEFA Team of the Year, and getting nominations for both PFA Players' Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year.

Fabregas began the following season in an uncertain position after Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona and speculation over Wenger's future with the club. But the youngster stepped up to the challenge and firmly established himself as one of the best in the world.

Scoring 13 goals, Fàbregas was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards for the second year running; he was later crowned the winner of the latter, and named in the PFA Team of the Year

Ending 2007/08 on a high, Fabregas was also one of the players of the tournament (despite only making a few starts) in Euro 2008. Providing assists and goals for Spain's march to the title.

Many would say Fabregas has fulfilled his obvious potential already, although still only 21, Gunners' fans can expect a lot more to come from the talented midfielder.

Emmanuel Eboue Bio

If Francesc Fabregas was the find of 2004/05 for Arsenal, then Eboue was most probably the emerging player of 2005/06.

Thrust into the first team ahead of time by injuries to several Arsenal defenders, including Ashley Cole, Gael Clichy, Lauren and Kerrea Gilbert, Eboue's quality in defence and driving runs from right-back brought praise from all quarters.

However, with manager Arsene Wenger unsure of his defensive capabilities and questionable temperament (prompting the purchase of right-back Bacary Sagna in summer 2007), Eboue was shifted to the right wing for the majority of the 2007/08 season.

He began his career with ASEC Abidjan in the Ivory Coast before moving to Belgium in 2002, having played 25 games and scoring three goals.

Eboue won his first international cap with the Ivory Coast in September 2004 in a World Cup qualifier against Sudan, which the nation won 5-0.

Eboue then joined Arsenal from Belgian side Beveren for an undisclosed fee in January 2005, where he had scored four goals in 65 appearances.

The player had been on trial at Highbury from the Gunners' feeder club the previous summer, featuring in six pre-season friendlies during which the team remained unbeaten.

Eboue started the FA Cup game against Stoke, playing 71 minutes before being replaced by Justin Hoyte.

He started the next two FA Cup games before being handed his Premiership debut as a 75th minute replacement for Kolo Toure in a 1-1 draw at Southampton in February - his last appearance of 2004/05.

His Arsenal career turned on two things. Firstly, the injuries to other Arsenal defenders. And secondly, a superb showing for the Ivory Coast at the African Nations Cup in Egypt in early 2005.

The Ivory Coast reached the final where they lost to the hosts on a penalty shootout and the young defender was impressive throughout.

On his return to England he was put straight into the first team, handed his first Premiership start at Liverpool as the Gunners went down 1-0 in February.

From then on Eboue was a fixture in the Arsenal side, allowing them to eventually let veteran Gunner Lauren join Portsmouth for the second half of the 2006/07 season. Eboue's marauding runs from the right-back position make him a danger to opposition defences, but he was never that assured in a defensive role.

This prompted Arsene Wenger to dip into the transfer market for Frenchman Bacary Sagna in summer 2007, and Eboue played right-wing for much of the season. In fact, even after an injury to Sagna, Wenger decided to play Kolo Toure at right-back rather than risk his Ivorian team-mate.

Signing a new long term deal in April 2007, Eboue is viewed as an excellent squad player by his manager, although has forged a reputation for being one of the most temperamental, hot-headed and petulant players in the League.

Vasiriki Abou Diaby Bio

Diaby signed for Arsenal from Auxerre for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £2million, in January 2006.

The midfielder came through the youth ranks at Auxerre and captained the French side which won the Under-19 European Championships in 2005, beating England 3-1 in the final in Belfast.

Diaby made his Auxerre bow in 2004/05 but had made only six league appearances and played twice in the UEFA Cup for Auxerre in 2005/06 due to a niggling injury.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger felt Diaby could add an extra dimension to the Gunners squad.

Diaby made his Arsenal debut as an 81st minute replacement for Robert Pires in a 1-0 defeat at Everton. He soon began to receive plaudits for his performances in the starting line-up.

Earning comparisons to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, Diaby's career took a turn for the worse when he suffered a broken and dislocated ankle caused by a reckless two-footed challenge by Sunderland's Dan Smith in May 2006.

Diaby was out for eight months, missing the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final against Barcelona, as well as the UEFA U-21 Championship 2006 with France.

He returned to action in January 2007, and his performances earned him a call-up to the full French squad where he won 2 caps and started against Austria.

Wenger used him on the left for a lot of the 2007/08 season and he showed his true potential with a stunning 25-yard strike against Derby. Although also showed his petulant side by getting his first red card against Bolton.

Preferring a central role, Diaby has the skills to replace the departed Mathieu Flamini in the heart of the midfield. Only then will he have a chance to put the Vieira comparisons to rest.

Amaury Bischoff Bio

Arsena signed Portugal under-21 midfielder Amaury Bischoff from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2008, after losing Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva.

The French-born Bischoff can play either in the centre of midfield or on the right and played just one game for Bremen last season.

The diminutive midfielder started his career with spells at French clubs SR Colmar and Strasbourg before moving to Bremen in 2005. He played for France's under-18 team before switching his allegiance to Portugal.

His only appearance for the Bundesliga team came against Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup in 2007.

Kolo Toure Bio

After joining Arsenal as something of a jack-of-all-trades, Toure has emerged as an essential player at the heart of the defence.

Arsenal signed Toure for an undisclosed sum, in the region of a paltry £150,000, from Asec Mimosas in February 2002.

Toure, aged 20 when joining the club, earned a deal after spending a period on trial at Highbury. He excelled during two games against West Ham United and had 17 caps to his name when joining the club after making his international debut against Rwanda in April 2000.

He impressed on Arsenal's tour of Austria in the summer of 2002, which led to his Gunners debut in the FA Community Shield victory over Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium.

The talented player continued to be a regular feature in the first team squad throughout the first month of the season, putting in a number of impressive performances from the bench.

After such a fine start to the campaign, his performances dipped a little and he was sent off in the Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven at Highbury.

If he had a good start to his Highbury career, then 2003/04 was on another level altogether. Toure was immense in central defence, barely putting a foot wrong as Arsenal lifted the title without losing a single Premiership game.

He continued to excel in the Arsenal team, helping the team to FA Cup glory in 2005, and he has been sorely missed when on African Nations Cup duty.

Seen by many as a future Arsenal captain, Toure has formed a useful partnership with William Gallas and his pace and power have become a vital part of the Arsenal backline.

Song Billong Bio

Arsenal signed Song on a season-long loan, with a view to a permanent transfer, on the eve of the 2005/06 season.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had invited the Cameroon-born player over for a trial in pre-season and took him on the tour of Austria.

He did enough in the friendlies with Weiz, Ritzing and FC Utrecht to earn a move to Highbury.

Although Song player at left-back for Bastia in 2004/05 he is seen as a central midfield prospect by the coaching staff at Arsenal.

Song won the Gambardella Cup - for the Under-18s - with Bastia after joining the French side in the summer of 2003.

Bastia reported they would receive a fee of £2.5million should Song earn a permanent contract with Arsenal.

He made his debut for the Gunners in a 2-0 home win over Everton but struggled to make an impact in the first team.

In 2007/08, Song played in the Carling Cup matches but was sorely missed in their elimination by Tottenham.

Towards the end of the season he played well and was drafted into the side, most notably in Arsenal's crucial visit to Old Trafford against Manchester United.

A player of obvious potential, Song is a useful squad player and should get the chance to make an impression on the first team in 2008/09.

Mikael Silvestre Bio

After years as a vital and essential member of the Manchester United defence, injuries in 2006/07 and 2007/08 left the Frenchman out of the first-team reckoning at Old Trafford and he decided to join arch-rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2008.

The signing of Nemanja Vidic in the 2006 January transfer window had pushed Silvestre into the shadows and the injury problems suffered since mean he has rarely featured for the club.

Strongly linked with a move away - he seemed only days away from joining Bordeaux - before joining Arsene Wenger at the Emirates stadium for a fee of around £750,000 and bringing much needed experience to the Gunners' backline.

Despite his obvious attributes of speed and touch, his positional play is sometimes lacking. 'Tweetie Pie', as he is known to the United fans, also suffers from over-elaboration in pressure situations.

Silvestre signed for Manchester United in September 1999 in a £4.5million deal from Inter Milan as a defender who could play at full-back and centre-back. He immediately became United's first choice as partner to Jaap Stam.

Silvestre made his full debut for France in February 2001 and soon became a regular. He was a member of the squad at the World Cup in Korea/Japan but did not get onto the pitch.

He had a poor Euro 2004 with France, giving away penalties against both England and Croatia as France went out to Greece in the quarter-finals.

He struggled with form in 2005/06, during which he made his 300th club appearance, and injury put his place at the club in some doubt. As United's first choice defence in 2006/7 became Neville-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra with Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Gabriel Heinze ahead of him, Silvestre looked headed for the exit. A dislocated shoulder ended his season in March and he played no part in the title run.

Bacary Sagna Bio

Sagna is a versatile defender who signed for Arsenal in summer 2007 from French club Auxerre for around £6million.

Of Senegalese descent, Sagna played for the French under-21 team during the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and has been tipped to cement a place in the full national side.

Impressing greatly in his time with Auxerre, Sagna won the Coupe de France in 2005 and his performances won him a place in the French Ligue 1's Team of the Year in 2006/07. He has showed that he is a solid defender who also poses a potent attacking threat down the flanks.

Sagna showed his class by making the right-back slot his own as soon as he arrived at Arsenal. Making 29 appearances in the Premier League, Sagna's impact was shown as he was injured in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea. Without him, the side (who were 1-0 up) capitulated and their title challenge faded.

He received his first call-up for the senior France National Team on May 24, 2007 for the Euro 2008 Qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia.

Named in the PFA Team of the Year in his first season, Sagna was rewarded for his fine form with a new contract, running until 2014. While he didn't make the French Euro 2008 squad, the right-back has proved himself to be a vital part of the Arsenal defence.

Gavin Hoyte Bio

Hoyte was captain of the U-18 team in 2006/07 and is the brother of current Arsenal first-team member Justin.

The defender can play at full-back, but plays well at centre-back as well and impressed enough to be called up to the bench for the FA Cup Fifth Round replay at Blackburn Rovers in 2007.

Having been at the club since age 9, the youngster is keen to emulate his brother and break into the first-team squad.

While he made 12 starts for the Arsenal second string last term, he was also one of the stars of the run to the FA Youth Cup Semi-Finals and has been tipped for future success at the club.

William Gallas Bio

Gallas has forged a reputation as one of the most commanding centre-backs in the League and has risen to captain Arsenal after a five-year spell at Chelsea.

Always concerned about being played out of position at left-back rather than in his preferred position in the centre, there was constant speculation about his future with foreign newspapers quoting him on his desire to move on.

He finally got his move away on transfer deadline day when swapping clubs with another wantaway star, Arsenal's Ashley Cole and signed for Arsenal.

Gallas was signed by Claudio Ranieri for the Stamford Bridge outfit in May 2001, snapped up from Marseille for £6.2million and dubbed as one of the brightest prospects France had to offer.

He made his debut in a 1-1 home draw against Newcastle United, and after a slow start he eventually blossomed into a fine player for Chelsea. Worth every penny, he played 41 games in his first season, netting two goals.

He grew in stature in the Chelsea line-up, earning his full France debut in a 5-0 demolition of Slovenia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in October 2002.

Gallas was in the France squad for Euro 2004, playing all four games as they were unexpectedly knocked out in the quarter-finals by Greece.

Despite spending much of the 2004/05 season speculating over his own future with Chelsea, Gallas continued to be a vital member of the first team. With Celestine Babayaro sold to Newcastle United and Wayne Bridge sidelined with an ankle injury, Gallas was forced to play at left-back for the second half of the season.

Much of the press speculation centred around his displeasure at being played out of position, ignoring the fact that Chelsea had no other player to slot in at left-back.

Gallas started 28 Premiership games - second only to John Terry among the club's central defenders - as Chelsea won the Premiership and the Carling Cup.

The centre-back was one of the first names on Jose Mourinho's teamsheet in 2005/06, as well as for France at the World Cup as they lost out to Italy on penalties in the final.

By this point Gallas had cemented his place as one of the best defenders in Europe, able to play anywhere across the back four and equally as adept in each position.

But Gallas continued to voice his displeasure at being unable to play in the centre of defence. And he finally earned a move away after making 225 Chelsea appearances and scoring 14 goals.

Most observers considered Arsenal to have got the better of the Cole-Gallas swap, and that certainly seemed to be the case with his early performances.

Gallas made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough and bagged his first goal in a 3-0 home victory over Sheffield United. He soon became a vital member of the first team alongside Kolo Toure, and was named captain for the 2007/08 season over Gilberto Silva.

Gallas scored against his old club, Chelsea, in December, to give the Gunners a 1-0 win; but his season was blemished by a tantrum thrown after the club drew 2-2 with Birmingham in February, conceding a penalty in the final minute.

Many critics blamed Gallas' outburst for Arsenal's failure to maintain their title challenge and the Frenchman could end up losing the captaincy as a result.

A colourful character, the centre-back brings important experience to a youthful side and is one of the most important players in Wenger's side.

Johan Djourou Bio

Defender Djourou has been unlucky with injuries during his time at the club, impressing on loan, but failing to reach full fitness when back at the Emirates.

He was handed his first chance of a run in the Arsenal side in the second half of 2005/06 with the Gunners struggling with defensive injuries.

The player earned his first Premiership start in the superb 7-0 home win over Middlesbrough and filled in admirably until Kolo Toure returned from international duty with the Ivory Coast.

Djourou made his first Arsenal appearance as a late substitute in the Carling Cup victory at Manchester City in October 2004.

Although born in the Ivory Coast, Djourou is actually holds citizenship with Switzerland and was part of the country's squad at the European Under-19 Championships in 2004.

Djourou, signed by the Gunners from Swiss side Etoile, earned rave reviews from all quarters as Switzerland reached the semi-finals.

With the departure of Sol Campbell, and an injury ravaged squad, Djourou was able to make his mark on the Arsenal side in 2005/06 with a series of good performances in the Premiership.

He also earned a call up to the Switzerland 2006 FIFA World Cup squad despite not playing in the qualifiers and only getting his international debut in March.

He then signed a six-year contract extension with Arsenal after the competition.

On August 10, 2007 he signed for Birmingham City on loan for a five-month period and impressed in the centre of defence during his time there. Returning to Arsenal in January, he was unable to displace William Gallas or Philippe Senderos, and now even Alex Song appears to have leapt above him in the pecking order.

Gaël Clichy Bio

Defender Clichy was given the chance to impress when Ashley Cole decided to leave the club in August 2006. The young Frenchman had been Cole's understudy since his arrival in 2003, and has gone on to make the left-back slot his own.

He had been widely regarded as an exciting prospect when he was signed from AS Cannes for a fee of £250,000 in August 2003 and has gone on to fulfill his potential.

Although he was used sparingly in his first season, as back-up to Cole, when called upon he showed superb potential and ability on the ball.

He earned a Championship medal after making 12 Premiership appearances in 2003/04.

Clichy appeared to have the perfect chance to fill the shoes of Cole when the England defender suffered a metatarsal injury in October 2005, but the youngster suffered the cruel blow of exactly the same injury a month later after impressing as the stand-in.

His best season for the club came in 2007/08 when he played 40 times for Gunners, using his pace and skill to provide an outlet on the left.

Clichy was unlucky to miss out on Euro 2008 with France as coach Raymond Domenech went for experience over youth, but now with only the young Armand Traore for competition, Clichy continues to improve and still only a youngster himself, is one of Wenger's stars of the future.

Vito Mannone Bio

Mannone in a young goalkeeper, behind senior goalkeepers Manuel Almunia and Lucas Fabianski in the Arsenal pecking order.

He was signed for £350,000 in the summer of 2005, from Atalanta, after the club agreed a compensation fee for the youngster, who had yet to sign a professional contract.

He made his debut for the club in a friendly against Barnet, but has not featured in a competitive match for the Gunners.

In August 2006, Mannone was loaned out to Championship side Barnsley, where he made a horrific error on his debut, gifting a goal to Preston after Nick Colgan had been sent off.

His next match for the club did not get much better, as he dropped a cross late on and allowed Luton to score the winner.

Injury cut his loan short, and he returned to Arsenal for treatment on his knee. He had been rumoured to go out on loan again in the 2007/08 season, but failed to find a club to guarantee him first-team football.

After returning to Arsenal the stopper made eight starts for the second string. The highlights of his season included a superb performance in a 2-2 draw with Reserve League South champions Reading and a fine penalty save in a 1-0 defeat to Watford.

Lukasz Fabianski Bio

Fabianski is a young Polish goalkeeper who signed from Legia Warszawa to provide competition for Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia. With Lehmann's departure in the summer of 2008, he will be understudy to Almunia and will no doubt get his chances of first-team action in the Carling Cup.

Having begun his career in the MSP Szamotuly football academy when he was 14-years-old, he played for three small Polish clubs before signing for Lech Poznan in the 2004/05 season.

Grabbing the attention of Legia Warszawa, Fabianski was signed and competed with Artur Boruc, who would later move to Celtic.

Fabianski was the club's first choice goalkeeper after the departure of Boruc and he helped Legia win the Polish league championship in the following 2005/2006 season.

With some exceptional performances, he won the Football Oscar for the best goalkeeper in the Polish Ekstraklasa in both the 2005 and 2006 seasons, catching the eye of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

The club agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to around £2million, with Arsenal for the 'keeper and Wenger revealed: 'He is one for the future. We have identified him as having all the qualities to challenge here and be one of the future great goalkeepers for Arsenal Football Club.'

While he lacks the experience required in this most specialised of positions, his basic abilities are top class. A quality shot stopper, he reads the game well and while he may have a few loose edges to smooth off, he is on course to be a top keeper for the next decade or so.

Manuel Almunia Bio

After initially failing to impress when given his chance of a run in the Arsenal side, Almunia is now firmly first choice after the departure of Jens Lehmann.

The Spaniard was first promoted to number one in December 2005 after Lehmann had come in for much criticism. But Almunia failed to impress, often looking suspect on crosses and failing to command his area.

The start of the 2007/08 season gave him another chance after a run of injuries for the veteran Lehmann, and Almunia made the #1 spot his own with a series of impressive performances.

With the highlight being a penalty save against Robbie Keane in December, Almunia proved himself capable of taking over the gloves from Lehmann and Arsene Wenger has said he will wear the #1 jersey for the new season with youngster Lukasz Fabianski behind him.

He started his career with Osasuna B, the Pamplona-born star then moved to Cartagonova for 1999/2000, but after failing to break into the first team he was signed by Sabadell in the summer of 2000.

Almunia enjoyed first team football in 2000/01, and earned a move to Celta Vigo - who loaned him out each season.

First of all he joined Eibar, where he impressed, before switching to Recreativo Huelva for 2002/03 and then Albacete for 2003/04. At Albacete he enjoyed a fine season as the club avoided relegation.

He began the season as second choice to Carlos Roa, but an injury to the experienced Argentine propelled him into the first team and he played a large role in helping them retain their status in the top flight.

His performances alerted Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who signed him on a long-term contract.

Almunia joined the Gunners in July 2004 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £500,000.

He made his debut against Manchester City in the Carling Cup.

But he came a cropper in the quarter-final clash at Manchester United, gifting the Red Devils a 19-second opener when failing to deal with a regulation save from a David Bellion shot.

Another error in the Champions League clash with Rosenborg seemed to signal the end of his run in goal, but Wenger kept the faith and his performances improved.

Lehmann did win his place back though, and Almunia returned to being a benchwarmer, although he showed a propensity for penalty heroics when given the chance.

First against Sheffield United in the 2004/05 FA Cup, where Almunia made two saves in a penalty shootout after the game finished 0-0, to take the Gunners through to the quarter-finals. And then again in the League Cup against Doncaster in 2005/06.

Almunia came on in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona after Lehmann had been sent off, but was unable to stop a Barca comeback in Paris.

He got an extended run in the first team at the start of the 2007/08 season due to Lehmann making two high profile mistakes and has never looked back. Playing well, his performances angered Lehmann who publicly showed his anger at not getting his place back in the side.

With Lehmann's depature in the summer of 2008, Almunia has the #1 jersey all to himself.
