Bacary Sagna Bio

Sagna is a versatile defender who signed for Arsenal in summer 2007 from French club Auxerre for around £6million.

Of Senegalese descent, Sagna played for the French under-21 team during the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and has been tipped to cement a place in the full national side.

Impressing greatly in his time with Auxerre, Sagna won the Coupe de France in 2005 and his performances won him a place in the French Ligue 1's Team of the Year in 2006/07. He has showed that he is a solid defender who also poses a potent attacking threat down the flanks.

Sagna showed his class by making the right-back slot his own as soon as he arrived at Arsenal. Making 29 appearances in the Premier League, Sagna's impact was shown as he was injured in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea. Without him, the side (who were 1-0 up) capitulated and their title challenge faded.

He received his first call-up for the senior France National Team on May 24, 2007 for the Euro 2008 Qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia.

Named in the PFA Team of the Year in his first season, Sagna was rewarded for his fine form with a new contract, running until 2014. While he didn't make the French Euro 2008 squad, the right-back has proved himself to be a vital part of the Arsenal defence.
