Fabio Aurelio Bio

Aurelio made the move from Valencia, following manager Rafa Benitez to Liverpool in the summer of 2006.

The talented Brazilian can play at left-back and left midfield and as such was in direct competition with John Arne Riise for a first team place in his debut season.

Despite a slow start Aurelio, the first Brazilian to play for Liverpool, battled his way into Rafa's European eleven but rupturing his Achilles tendon during the Champions League quarter-final win in PSV Eindhoven. The injury ended his season.

After five months on the sidelines he made his comeback for the 2207/08 season as a second-half substitute against FC Porto. He re-established himself as Liverpool's first choice left-back only to tear his abductor muscle after a clash with Chelsea's Joe Cole.

Aurelio is a versatile defender/winger who can also play as a holding midfielder. He also possesses a fearsome shot and is well known for his free-kick ability.

Coming through the ranks at Sao Paulo, the Brazilian has represented his country at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-21 levels. He also played in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

He moved to Valencia in 2001 and signed a six-year contract. His first season saw his first major trophy win as Valencia won their first La Liga title in 31 years.

He established himself as one of Spain's best left-backs in the following season, but then broke his leg and missed most of the 2003/04 season.

Falling out of favour in Valencia with the departure of Benitez, Aurelio followed his manager to England and signed for Liverpool in July 2006.

He said: 'The most important moments I had in my career were the titles (with Valencia) and that was with Benitez. He trusted me and he continues to trust me and that is what I value more.'
