Manucho Bio

Mateus Alberto Contreiras Gonçalves, better known as Manucho, signed for Manchester United in January 2008 from Petro Atlético.

A skillful attacking player who had caught the eye of United's scouts in Africa, Manucho was forced to go out on loan for the remainder of that season as he did not qualify for a UK work permit. He moved to Greece to play for Panathinaikos, where he scored four goals in seven appearances.

The Angola international was granted his permit ahead of the 2008/09 Premier League campaign.

The player began his career with youth team Flamenguinhos before turning profressional with Benfica de Luanda in Angola. He then moved to Petro Atlético where he finally began to shine, scoring 31 goals in two seasons in 2006 and 2007.

Joining Panathinaikos in January 2008, he scored on his debut against Larissa.

He was part of the Angola squad at the 2008 African Cup opf Nations.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We have had Manucho here for a three-week trial and have been impressed enough to offer him a contract.

"He is a tall, agile, quick forward and through contacts that Carlos (Queiroz) has, was brought to our attention around six months ago."

He made his debut as an 84th minute replacement for Ryan Giggs in a 3-1 Carling Cup win at home to Middlesbrough.
