Martin Skrtel Bio

Slovak international Skrtel joined Liverpool for a fee of £6.5 million in January 2008, signing a four-year contract.

The 6'4" no-nonsense centre-back made his full Liverpool debut that same month in the 4th Round of the FA Cup against non-league Havant & Waterlooville It was not a great start as he nervously gave away a corner which put Liverpool 1-0 behind.

However, he recovered from a wobbly start to be voted as Man of the Match on the club's official website on a number of occasions as he played out 19 games in his debut season.

Skrtel began his career with FC Previdza after choosing to follow his father into football instead of following a career in ice hockey.

From there he enjoyed a spell with FC Trencin before moving to the Russian Premier League with FC Zenit in 2004. He played 113 times and scored five goals for the club.
